The Information Technology Department supports the Town of Watertown's administrative information systems and assists in the implementation of new computer technologies.

Located in Town Hall, the Department administers the Town's wide-area computer network, which connects:

The Department provides the computing platforms which process the Town's financial, accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, and water/sewer billing systems, as well as real estate billing and collection. It also maintains the Town's website, however, many departments also have access in order to provide real-time information.

The Town's computer network provides a complete electronic platform for employees to communicate and share documents. The network was recently upgraded with new servers and desktop computers.

Built on a backbone of high-speed fiber optic cabling, the system allows for secure email and extensive resource sharing among Town departments. A firewall provides secured Internet email and web browsing. Anti-virus software is configured to update network computers automatically with the latest patches.

In addition to many new features on the Town's web site, there is now Public wireless Internet access in the Council Chambers in Town Hall. Town Councilors will use a secured, private, employee-only wireless access connection with new laptops to promote efficiency and reduce the use of paper. A new on-line Recreation portal is now available.

There is an on-going initiative to promote the efficient use of Town IT resources and reduce costs by colloboration among departments. The Town and School IT have shared staff, resources, and technical knowledge, and will continue to share and consolidate resources in the future.
