John A. Ryan Arena

Mission Statement:

The mission of the John A. Ryan Arena to provide the citizens of the Town of Watertown with opportunity to practice and participate in their ice sports of choice for a wide variety of age groups. The John A. Ryan Arena will provide a facility that meets the requirements of its users and will strive to make improvements to the facility that will benefit the residents of the Town of Watertown.
The John A. Ryan Arena was built in 1972 as approved by the Honorable Town Council.  The arena is the home of many local and area groups.  The Arena is the home of the Watertown High School Boys and Girls Hockey teams.  Bentley University, a Division 1 NCAA Ice Hockey Program playing in the Atlantic Hockey League, has played at the John A. Ryan Arena since 1975.  The Newton South High School Boys Varsity Hockey team, as well as the St. Joseph Preparatory High School Boys Varsity Ice hockey team, also call the John A. Ryan Arena home.

The Ryan Arena, also known as the JAR is the home to the Watertown Youth Hockey Program and the Watertown Lady Raiders Girls youth Hockey programs.  Neighboring youth hockey programs also use the JAR as a part of their programs.  Belmont Youth Hockey, Waltham Youth Hockey, Newton Youth Hockey, the Boston Junior Eagles as well as the Valley Youth Hockey and Middlesex Yankee Conference Youth Girls Leagues also play in the Ryan Arena.

The Arena is the home of the Catholic Central JV Ice Hockey league and hosts ice hockey games in the state high school hockey tournament of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).

For adult groups, the Watertown Men’s Senior A Hockey League, which started play in 1972, continues to call the Ryan Arena its home.  Hockey New England, formerly known as Greater Boston Hockey, uses the JAR as one of its rinks in promoting adult ice hockey.  Several adult groups continue to use the JAR for its recreational ice hockey purposes.
