Filippello Park Repurposing Proposal
Proposed Repurposed Space at Filippello Park for Pickleball
Take the survey about the proposal to Repurpose Court Space at Filippello Park.
Presentation slides for meeting on February 20, 2024
The community in Watertown has expressed interest in the construction of pickleball courts in recent years. In a collaborative effort between City departments and the Council, many options have been explored to identify the best location for these courts, all while taking into consideration important factors such as noise, space, usage, and accessibility.
Currently, only one location in Watertown has a permanent pickleball court, which can be found at Filippello Park in the East End; meanwhile, tennis courts around the city at Victory Field, Cannalonga Park, and Moxley Park have additional lines painted for pickleball use as well.
After reviewing the potential options, the City of Watertown has developed a proposal to repurpose the court space at Filippello Park and build 6 pickleball courts for community use. These courts would sit directly next to the existing basketball court. A diagram of the proposed repurposing can be found below.
This proposal to repurpose the court space means that the existing futsal court at Filippello Park would no longer be in its current location. However, the futsal goals would remain at Filippello Park and available to be used on the current basketball court to serve both sports. Additionally, if this proposal were to move forward, the City would also encourage futsal players to consider the multi-use rinks as alternative options at both Moxley and Casey Parks.
Upcoming Meeting to Discuss Proposal
The City of Watertown finds it critical to hear feedback from residents. This is not a finalized plan, and residents’ input is greatly valued in projects like this one! We encourage residents to attend a meeting at the Hosmer School (1 Concord Rd) on February 20, 2024, at 6:30pm to learn more about the proposal, to speak directly with City officials, and to share their thoughts on the project!
If you have questions or wish to voice your feedback, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Community Engagement Specialist, Tyler Cote (tcote@watertown-ma.gov), or the Parks Project email address (parksprojects@watertown-ma.gov).
