Outreach & Assistance
The Senior Center Case Worker works with seniors and their families and advocates for seniors in the community by directing individuals to appropriate services and working with outside agencies. The Case Worker provides emotional support to seniors and their families through home visits and phone contact, and helps with emergency assistance requests, completion of applications for MassHealth, affordable housing, fuel assistance, and food stamps (SNAP), and provides counseling and referral, including information about Springwell, the local Aging Services Access Point (ASAP) and Area Agency on Aging serving Watertown with in-home services and home-delivered meals.
Information & Referral
Call the Senior Center at 617-972-6490 to find out about services and resources available for seniors. The Watertown Senior News is published monthly, and contains information about lectures, trips, movies, and a daily calendar of activities at the Senior Center. The newsletter is free and available at the City Hall, Senior Center, and Library all month, and is distributed to banks, post offices, the malls, places of worship, and senior housing sites at the beginning of each month. The Watertown Council on Aging/Senior Center provides a directory of local senior resources (PDF). Hard copies of the Directory of Senior Services are available at the Senior Center and can also be obtained by calling 617-972-6490. Medicare Health Insurance Counseling (SHINE)
A SHINE Counselor (Serving the Health Information Needs of Everyone) is available through the Senior Center by appointment. SHINE is a service that provides free counseling about Medicare and prescription drug coverage and can be especially helpful during Medicare Open Enrollment (October each year) when plans can be changed.
Property Tax Work-Off Program
The City of Watertown funds this program yearly for up to 10 seniors and/or veterans to work for a City Department in exchange for a $1,500 property tax deduction. Watertown Senior Shuttle - Shopping Bus
Due to COVID-19, the bus is now running on a by-appointment schedule. Call 617-972-6490 to make your appointment. The Watertown Senior Shuttle provides door-to-door transportation for shopping to Watertown seniors 60 years of age and older. The bus regularly travels to the Stop and Shop/CVS/Watertown Savings Bank on Watertown Street and to Market Basket, Marshalls, Target, Hannaford, and Roche Brothers on special dates. See the newsletter for details or call the Senior Center. There is a suggested donation of $2 round trip.
Supplemental Transportation for Watertown Seniors
This service can be arranged by calling the Senior Center at 617-972-6490. This program is designed to provide readily accessible transportation assistance via local taxi service for seniors in need of last-minute medical appointments, or emergency transportation to locations within the community, and is funded through the Town and grants from the Marshall Home Fund. Service is available as funding permits. Suggested donation.
Income Tax Preparation
Volunteers, trained and certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), prepare tax returns at the Senior Center, by appointment, mid-February through April 15. AARP sponsors this program for seniors and disabled adults.
Senior Parking Permits
For Watertown residents 65 and older, parking permits are available for up to two hours of free parking at meters in municipal lots. Permits are $3 for two years and $2 for one year. Call the Senior Center with your driver's license and car registration to purchase one or to renew over the phone.
